Afghan Safi Airways flights suspended due to $16 million debts
The Afghan Civil Aviation Authority [ACAA] has announced that it will ground Safi Airways, an Afghan airline operating since 2006, for failing to pay taxes amounting to 1.6 billion Afghanis (16.7 million dollars).
“Effective Tuesday, all domestic flights and Thursday all international flights are suspended,” a statement by the ACAA said on Sunday.
According to the statement, the company refused to pay its taxes and debts to the Afghan Ministry of Finance over a two-year period from March 2011 to March 2013, despite repeated warnings “to take action.”
The Afghan government has given the airline one month to “pay its debts and taxes through the previously agreed upon terms,” otherwise “the tax department can request seizure and sale of all airline assets via the court.”
Safi Airways currently operates 74 flights per week to seven domestic and international destinations.
