Muttaqi again asks US to unblock Afghan assets

Faced with a severe cash crisis, Afghanistan has once again urged the United States to immediately unblock its assets.

Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi reiterated the call in an interview with China Radio International (CRI) News on Sunday.

The US was no longer engaged in a war with Afghanistan and locking the Afghan assets lacked any logical justification, the minister argued.

He demanded: “The assets should be freed immediately. The Americans don’t have any military front against us now. What is the reason for freezing the assets?”

Muttaqi added the reserves worth $9.5 billion belonged to the people of Afghanistan, not to the Islamic Emirate.

The foreign minister asked: “The US froze our assets and then told us that it will provide us humanitarian aid. What does it mean?”

In a letter earlier this month, Muttaqi asked the US Congress to help free the Afghan assets as the country faced a humanitarian crisis.
